TONINHO HORTA
Toninho Horta is a Brazilian guitarist, composer, and arranger widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in modern Brazilian jazz and Música Popular Brasileira (MPB).
He was born in 1948 in Belo Horizonte, Brazil, and became closely associated with the “Clube da Esquina” movement—a groundbreaking musical collective from Minas Gerais that also included artists like Milton Nascimento and Lô Borges. That movement blended Brazilian folk and popular music with jazz harmonies, rock influences, and sophisticated songwriting.
Unlike many virtuoso guitarists who focus on speed or technical flash, Horta’s playing is more about color, harmony, and emotional nuance. His compositions often feel harmonically dense but still very melodic.
Toninho Horta is a key bridge between Brazilian popular music and advanced jazz harmony, and he’s especially respected by musicians for his chord vocabulary and compositional sophistication.
