PHIL DONKIN
Phil Donkin is a British jazz double bassist and composer known for his work in contemporary jazz and improvisational music.
He grew up in the UK and studied jazz performance at the Royal Academy of Music in London, where he developed a strong reputation as a technically skilled and musically flexible bassist. Over the years, he has built a career playing with a wide range of prominent jazz musicians across Europe and the United States.
Donkin has performed and recorded with artists such as saxophonist Chris Potter, drummer Billy Hart, guitarist Kurt Rosenwinkel, and pianist Django Bates. His playing is often associated with modern jazz that blends straight-ahead tradition with more experimental and rhythmically complex approaches.
As a bandleader and composer, he has released his own projects that highlight both acoustic jazz interplay and more contemporary, exploratory writing for small ensembles. He is also active as a collaborator in various international jazz scenes, particularly in Germany and the UK.
